TIME TO PAY
It’s a never-ending debate should college athletes get paid. I say YES. In revenue producing sports the athletes should be paid. So football and basketball(men’s) players should be paid. Before you say why only those sports and not the others here is why the other sports baseball, softball, and volleyball etc don’t give full scholarships and DON’T fund the entire athletic department. My suggestion is pay football and men’s basketball players a max of $500 a month and 10% of all sales from jersey, t-shirt and autographs with the player’s name and/or likeness when the athlete has finished his eligibility. It’s a total shame that campus bookstores can sell memorabilia of players and keep all the profit. I have heard people say but the jersey sale is part of the university and its up to the school to sale whatever number they want, the school can sale whatever jersey number they want but the fans buy a certain number of the most popular player on the team. How many jersey’s did Florida sale of the number 15 before Tebow played and how many did they sale when Tebow was playing? And he can’t get 1 cent from the sale totally not fair. Miley Cyrus plays Hannah Montana which is owned by Disney but when anything is bought with her likeness on it she gets money for it why not college sports. You can say the athlete gets a full scholarship and normal students have to work or take out loans to pay for school. I understand that too I think school should be free paid by the government but that’s a different argument for a different day. Athletes can’t work playing a college sport is a full year thing off-season means maybe 2-3 weeks off max. I had college teammates who couldn’t afford toothpaste and deodorant and were totally embarrassed when we wanted to go somewhere and the didn’t have proper clothes or money to go. But we go play “money games” vs big schools for that $50,000 check for our school and got $5 meal money. The NCAA got a 11 billion dollar deal for the men’s basketball tournament and not the mention the money that football gets from the bowl games and the non sense BCS system and the people who produced the results for the huge contract deals can’t get extra spending money? Pay the athletes and it would do away with the things some athletes do to get money like selling their championship rings, game jerseys, and game shoes to get some money. Schools can afford it too take Alabama’s football team if you paid 85 players $500 a month for the school year that would be $425,000 for the year and the head coach makes 4 million dollars a year and the defense coordinator makes 750,000 a year cut the head coaches salary to 3.5 million I am sure he can survive on that right?
